Why the Ohio AFL-CIO Is Important

Joining the Ohio AFL-CIO is important so that our locals can contribute to building power for all working families in Ohio - the power to define a vision for working people in our community, to realize that vision, to be among the players that determine the kind of state we have and the services provided to workers, students, and the needy.  Unions can help create a more powerful labor movement that will elect progressive candidates to public office - a movement that will enact ordinances and policies that improve the quality of life for working families and those at the lowest rungs of the economic ladder.

Belonging also provides:

Political Power - joining the more than 650,000 other unionists in Ohio gives labor a strong say in who gets elected to office and what programs are offered to Ohio's citizens.

Issue Advocacy - the state federation provides working people with one voice on legislation and initiatives such as collective bargaining, prevailing wage, labor law, state budgets, pensions, health care, and education policy.

Legal Protections - Workers statewide benefit from the Ohio AFL-CIO legal action to stop anti-labor policy from being implemented. This includes "right to work" legistation.

Solidarity & Community Support - Over 700,000 Ohioans belong to Working America - the AFL-CIO's allied organization for workers without a union in the workplace.  Add these workers to the number of Ohio unionists and we have a action group more than 1,300,000 strong!

Communications - Check out the current edition of "The Workers Voice" by clicking on the download icon below.  www.ohaflcio.org provides up to date information for union members.

Training & Conferences - Regular training sessions are offered around the state.  Things like political action, legislation, and workers compensation are offered to local unions.

Agenda Setting - By belonging to the Ohio AFL-CIO a local union is given the opportunity to participate in the decisions made for working people.  You don't have a say if you do not belong!
